So I’m going to give it to you straight: Jupiter is a total game-changer. And you’ve taken an incredible first step towards reaching your hair goals by using their Balancing Shampoo and Nourishing Conditioner.
My name is Dr. Julie Karen and I’m a Board Certified Dermatologist at CompleteSkinMD in Manhattan, along with my sister Dr. Elizabeth Hale (more on our credentials here). I’m also the Head of Science at Jupiter, where I work closely with the leadership team on ensuring that they’re using the most effective formulations for treating the scalp without any of the harsh, color-stripping chemicals found in those ubiquitous blue bottle drugstore brands.
Taking a step back, as a dermatologist, I can say with scientific certainty that the way to healthy, strong, flake-free hair - no matter where you are on your hair care journey - is by focusing on the health of your scalp. And when targeting a specific issue such as a Seborrheic Dermatitis (an overproduction of oil resulting in yellowish flakes), itching, redness or run-of-the-mill dry scalp, you almost always want to use a shampoo and conditioner that can help reset your scalp’s microbiome to its healthiest state.
As such, I’ve compiled a little background and guidance on the Balancing Shampoo, Nourishing Conditioner and Restoring Serum so you know what you’re using, why you’re using it and how to use them.
BALANCING SHAMPOO
In a nutshell: Jupiter’s Balancing Shampoo uses the medicated ingredient Zinc Pyrithione to do the heavy lifting on restoring your scalp to its most optimal state. Unlike other scalp shampoos, it’s safe for everyday use, free of artificial fragrances, reduces hair breakage by over 75% and not just protects color-treated or chemically-treated hair, but enhances it.
Key ingredient: The key word above is “medicated.” Without a medicated ingredient like Zinc Pyrithione, you’re effectively treating the symptom rather than the underlying issue causing scalp discomfort. While perfectly suitable for anyone with a drier scalp, I generally recommend the Shampoo for those who tend to get greasy buildup or produce larger, scalier yellow flakes (see Seborrheic Dermatitis above)
What to expect: No more flakes within two weeks of use as directed. Many see results immediately, but all scalps are different.
How to use: When using, apply to (and coat) a wet scalp and hair 3-4x week - more if you’re experiencing the oily buildup described above, and fewer if you’re starting to feel like your scalp might be drying out too quickly. Let the shampoo sit on your scalp for 2-3 minutes in the shower to let the Zinc Pyrithione really sink in, then rinse as you normally would.
What else: because the shampoo doesn’t use any artificial foaming agents, you should expect to see less of a lather than you’re used to. That’s ok! The shampoo is most certainly doing what it’s intended to do. Feel free to do a second wash prior to conditioning if you’re seeking that extra sudsy lather - the first treatment will remove oil/buildup.
NOURISHING CONDITIONER
In a nutshell: The Nourishing Conditioner is packed with skin smoothing ingredients that dermatologists like me love. When you apply the conditioner directly to the scalp, you’re giving your skin and the hair follicle the hydration it needs.
Key ingredient: Colloidal oatmeal takes center stage here, and for good reason. It binds to your skin, locks in moisture and its anti-inflammatory properties help soften and smoothen your skin…which is what your scalp is, just on your head underneath your hair.
What to expect: Applying a conditioner directly to your scalp root-to-tip may be foreign to you as well. But again, great hair starts at the scalp. And you’ll see a change in volume, frizz, and split ends with consistent use.
How to use: Apply every time you wash directly to your scalp, drawing it out from root-to-tip. Let sit for 30-60 seconds before rinsing. For those experiencing a drier scalp, make sure that you’re using it even when you’re not shampooing.
What else: For some of the less informed fellas reading this blog, using a shampoo and a conditioner may be foreign to you. But a 2-in-1 simply cannot be as effective as a 2-in-2. Your hair will be softer, more nourished, and with a bit more volume.
RESTORING SERUM
In a nutshell: One of my favorite - and one of Jupiter’s most popular - products on the market. Think of the first-of-its-kind Restoring Serum as you would the Balancing Shampoo for when you can’t (or don’t want to) wash.
Key ingredient: Like the Balancing Shampoo, it contains the medicated ingredient Zinc Pyrithione for oil control, and green tea, aloe vera and coconut oil for soothing an angry scalp.
What to expect: Immediate relief from dry, itchy and/or flaky patches on your scalp. It has a bit of a cooling sensation without it being overpowering, so expect some audible “oohs” or “ahhs.”
How to use: Start by parting your hair to directly apply the serum in a thin layer across a damp or dry scalp up to 4 times per day - closer to 4 if you need more oil control and fewer times if you simply need a touch up. Remember to rub it in, let sit and dry naturally.
What else: The needle nose tip was designed to directly target itchy, red or flakey troublespots, making it great for those in a pinch or tend to wash their hair less frequently. It’s particularly popular with those sporting protective hairstyles - be it braids, weaves, cornrows, extensions or otherwise.
As a final word to the wise, remember that consistency is key. The Shampoo and Conditioner were specifically formulated to work together so swapping in other products may not deliver the same results because you’re introducing a new variable onto your scalp. Keep using the products beyond any amelioration of symptoms or issues - while they may be excellent for calming angry scalps, they’re fundamentally excellent products to deliver the head-turning hair you’ve always wanted.
I simply couldn’t be more excited for you.
